Index card base needs to be 12" and the fewer the cards and more book is a better ratio

Folder the cards in half to form a moderately sharp angle - about 60 degrees. Then put the cards down on the base along the edge with the fold in it, so that each one is free standing.

If you're allowed sticky tape, a much stronger support can be made by rolling the cards into tubes with tape to hold the tubes in place, and then taping lots of tubes together side by side in a big block.

oops sorry cant roll them if you have an unlimited number of cards how about an 11" high stack of cards 2-3 cards wide. It's not the thinking man's approach but it will work and hold lots of bricks.
