Large rods or balls are placed inside of a large rotating mill. the materials that need pulverization are added, the action of the mill is used to crush the material. to separate the components either water is used to float them taking advantage of their density or screening is used for separation, another dry method is called roasting where furnaces are used as in the production of cement powder

Tubular Mills, with balls as grinding media, are used for grinding lime stone, cement clinker, coal, iron ore and many other minerals. Majority of the ball mill applications are dry process, which means that the material to be ground are fed into the mill in dry condition and the product is dry powder.. Some applications such as Lime stone grinding in cement industries, Copper ore, Bauxite grinding etc are wet process, because water is added to the mill along with the feed and the product is a slurry.

The ball mill itself is pretty much the same for wet or dry process. The obvious difference is that for wet process, water is added to produce a slurry. For dry, no water to produce a powder.
