When it comes to building design, architects are the project managers and civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineers support the architect in designing the specific systems within the building. The architect specifies the size and shape of the building, designs the exterior fascia, the interior finishes, floor plan, windows, insulation system, etc. Structural engineers design the foundation and framework of the building. Civil engineers design the site work, access roads, drainage, and water and sewer connections. Mechanical engineers design heating, ventilation, air conditioning, interior plumbing and associated controls. Electrical engineers design the power service and distribution systems, lighting, signaling, alarms, telecommunications, digital communications, intercommunications, fire alarm, closed circuit television, security systems, etc. Engineers also design a myriad of other systems such as highways, bridges, airports, rail system, power plants and systems, manufacturing process, water and sewage systems, etc.. Designer is a generic term for someone who may assist architects and engineers, who may perform cad drafting or design interior décor of buildings. Electrical designers may perform minor design tasks in support of electrical engineers. Mechanical designers may design plumbing or controls in support of mechanical engineers.
