I am a Display fireworks shooter so I deal with very loud noises on a regular basis. I personally use

MAX1 earplugs NRR33 as they are disposable and I can get 200 of them for about 30 bucks. They are very comfortable and when shooting 6 inch shells from a couple feet away I don't hear much at all. Normally that kind of noise and pressure is loud enough to pop your ears and make them bleed. Hope this helps.

I looked them up for you here is the details.

Max uncorded single-use earplug. The world's most used polyurethane foam earplug. Extremely comfortable, especially for long-term wear. Smooth, soil-resistant closed-cell foam skin prevents dirt build-up. Contoured bell-shape is easier to insert and resists the tendency to back-out of the ear canal. NRR 33.

Product Description

MAX 1 (NRR 33) pre-shaped foam earplugs feature a smooth outer skin for maximum user comfort. The NRR 33 rating makes the MAX the highest rated disposable earplug in the U.S. The smooth, soil-resistant skin helps prevent dirt from penetrating the surface prior to insertion. Attenuation tested in accordance with ANSI S3.19-1974. Coral color. Individually packed in poly bags, 200 pair per box.

You will not be able to block it all. The NRR 33 mentioned are good. There are other plugs as well. You can increase this a bit by adding ear muffs. If the muffs are 25 it doesn't work to add the 33 to the 25 and get 58. You will get just a little bit better.

There are other types as well. You can add white or pink noise to try to mask it. There are active ones which attempt to counteract the noise by producing an out of phase counter noise. There are also active ones that are only active when there is noise above a certain DB level.

ENTIRELY block? Well first, you have to look at what sound is. It is a propagating wave of pressure change through the air or any other medium that your ear can detect. The pressure fluctuations strike your ear drum and causes vibrations which you feel and your brain interprets as sound. If you want to completely block it, that is, not let a single vibration through.. you will have to eliminate the air. (see, explosions in space are actually silent) Or you can use ear plugs which uses a soft material to dampen the incoming sound waves.

Since you haven't said what kind of noise you are trying to eliminate it is difficult to be specific but one very effective ear plug is the wax type that can be purchased at any pharmacy. They conform to your ears and block the noise. They are also very comfortable for sleeping.
