all the electric motors used in fans, washing machines, water pumps and other equipments are induction motors...

almost all the equipments need variable speeds for different types of applications...

hence ther are regulators or selectors for different speeds...

Apart from the obvious advantage of being able to adjust equipments (like fans, air conditioners, blowers, pumps etc.) to suit our comfort and requirements, there are a lot of other advantages like:

Power saving

Increase in life span

Less maintenance

Avoiding shock loading

Soft starting

Decrease in in-rush current during starting

Safety

In most of the cases, the variable speed control is achieved by incorporation of external devices like auto-transformers, variable resistors, regulators, Variable frequency drives etc.

In rare cases, step speed control is possible by pole switching in multi-speed induction motors.

Variable frequency drive for motors are giving much ease in controlling feed to confeyors for correct proportions in a manufacturing company.Pump speeds and flow may be controlled easily with variable speed drives. However, engineers in the manufacturing plants are studying its cost to benefit ratio. VF frequency drives are quite expensive as compared to variable speed drives using hydrau;lic system and gear reducers.

Variable speed motors are great devices, as you don't have to use gears or belts to change the speed. My end mill has a constant speed motor, so I am constantly changing the belt drive to control the speed.

adding to the info already existing............

**a VFD can double the speed of the motor, so there is less initial investment on motor. Also, the efficiency improves.

** in process & chemical industries, the flow is controlled by bypassing the additional liquid. This causes enegy loss. A VSD can eliminate this loss directly. Pay-back period of VFD is quite low due to this reason.

Change speed without using gearbox.

Boosting torque (some model).

Remote control/signal by PLC (most model),interlocking mode.

Soft starting. Without costly star/delta contactor & panel. Eliminate contactor circuit (contactor is built-in Variable Speed Drive).

Programmable speed scenario (most model).

Reverse rotation with one signal/button.

Dynamic braking capability (some model, with braking resistor - optional)

Monitor rpm / rpm counter.

Monitor voltage & current.

Energy saving (most model).

Thermal fuse (simulated, most model).

Programmable current limit/fuse.

Hour meter (most model).

Can accept 2 phase input power (some model).
