If that one is a laptop then u better use that one

If it is not then buy a good lappie with enough power like around 1gb ram and 250gb hdd would be enough.Mostly helps a lot during project works

If you have a laptop and you can use it for collegewrk thn go for a good powerful Desktop Pc

with 320 gb HDD, intel core2duo and above,1-2gb or above(ram),good sound card, a graphic card, etc.

Also a good monitor.

The above config. would be enough to deal with future of 3-4 years also handle CAD,Animation,or video editing softwares easily.

Being an engg. student u better start looking at assembled pcs since it gives u more insight into computing and maintenance.

Best of Luck

I just got an Acer 5740 for college, going to be a computer science major. Been very happy with it. It's durable, comfortable to use, and it's got processing power but it wasn't too expensive.

If it is just for school, you can buy any cheap reliable laptop (Toshiba and Lenovo are great brands).

For the first 2 years you won't really need much power from your laptop since the programs that you'll be using most of the time are MS Word and MS Excel (typing lab reports and typing essays for your general ed courses).

The only programs that usually require extra power from your computer are those that use 3D rendering such as Solidworks or AutoCAD (specifically, the 3D CAD programs), which are usually used by mechanical and civil engineers. And yet, the minimum requirements for those programs are a Pentium 4 CPU and 4GB of RAM so you don't even need a special computer to run them.

If you are going for computer science, stick to the MacBook since its UNIX based OS can make programming easier sometimes :)

So, in other wrds, you only need a regular computer to run most of the engineering programs that you may use during your engineering education. The fastest and most powerful laptops are usually better than your average PC in one thing: Videogames ;)

Make sure you get a laptop and not a desktop, since during your upper division you'll spend more time at school than anywhere else.
