What formats would I use for 3D printing? Like what file formats would I need to export from my CAD program to print on a 3D printer?
Are there any documents that spec out file formats?

File formats often depend on the type of 3D modeling software used, but there are many common formats:
.stl – STL is a file format native to the stereolithography CAD software created by 3D Systems.
.iges – The Initial Graphics Exchange Specification (IGES) (pronounced eye-jess) defines a neutral data format that allows the digital exchange of information among Computer-aided design (CAD) systems.
.obj – OBJ (or .OBJ) is a geometry definition file format first developed by Wavefront Technologies for its Advanced Visualizer animation package. The file format is open and has been adopted by other 3D graphics application vendors. For the most part it is a universally accepted format.
.3ds – 3DS is one of the file formats used by the Autodesk 3ds Max 3D modeling, animation and rendering software.

This are the format commonly used for 3D printing
Filetypes: DAE, OBJ, STL, X3D, X3DB, X3DV, WRL
For color 3D prints: DAE, WRL, X3D, X3DB, X3DV
You can try uploading onto Zelta3D Malaysia - www.zelta3d.my
The y have an online quote system, the system will prompt you if the file is in incorrect format.
Hope this helps

Blender is what I use for all of my 3D printing models and modeling. Blender measures in "Blender Units", which I believe are 1mm? There is a tape measure tool in there somewhere. The other option is if you use a good printing program, like Repetier Host, it will have an "Info" icon that will tell you how big your object is. You can also scale your object IN Repetier Host and keep checking the "info" on it to get your exact dimensions. Just make sure you export your part as an .stl from Blender. And VERY IMPORTANT: All objects you want printed and included in your .stl file MUST BE SELECTED when you click "Export As .STL!!"

It depends on the type and the technology used by your 3D printer. The most common file format is STL that was generated from a CAD file used in your 3D modeling software.

You can use the formats of OBJ, IGES for 3D Printing. The filaments for 3D printing You can use ABS or PLA, ABS costs you cheaper.
