It is not free. The is a free "lookalike" called Octave. http://www.gnu.org/software/octave/

Edit: Another great package is wxMaxima. It's free, too. It is not compatible with MatLab, but it can do everything Matlab can and can symbolic math, too.

Nope.

$99 for student version of the software on Matlab's website, which is Mathworks.com

No student ID or email required, but they do ask you what school you are from, address, phone number, and email.

You need Mac OS X Lion or newer.

Or Windows 7 or newer.

At least 1 GB of ram required to run the program, but 2 is recommended for fast speed.

You also need an Intel based processor, which all new Mac's and most Windows based computers have.

If you are a student with an official student ID, you can buy a copy of Matlab for super cheap, like a couple hundred bucks.

All versions of Matlab since version 2007b "phone home", so you can't just copy the program, nor is there a hack available.

Edit: Thanks for the details C7S

I recommend a 64-bit machine too. Matlab likes to use contiguous memory, and you can run out of memory quickly on a 32-bit machine
