I will be going into my third year of Aerospace Engineering and there will be a lot of CFD stuff involved. I want to prepare myself by undertaking a CAD foundation professional course at a centre in either Solidworks or ANSYS as it would look good on my CV as well.

Question is, which would be better worth learning ? They both cost the same, and I know how to use NX6.0, which is sort of similar to solidworks...I would be going for a placement year as well...so I want to really learn one CAD software that would be of help to me in my 3rd year and placement year as well

Well, depending on where you work, will depend on what you use. Solidworks is the most common, but it's FEA is considered basic and can for the most only handle static Load situations with some capabilities of doing fatigue loading and impulse loads, but that comes only with the extra ($10,000 non-student) simulation pro package. Since you are in aerospace, their is a good chance you'd be using CATIA which I'm not sure has a student version. It is made by the same people as solidworks and can be thought of as solidworks big brother. There are all types of of add-on and packages that work within CATIA but I'm not sure that the FEA is any more complex. As far as ANSYS goes, it's power lies in the ability of writing other programs to access it and setup the parameters. It's not very similar solidworks and I don't believe it will handle very complex shapes. Hope that helps you to make a choice.

In all honesty, once you learn one modeling package it's really easy to pick up a second one. You could easily learn both. That being said, I'm fond of solidworks

SOLID WORK IS A MODELING SOFTWARE WHEREAS ANSYS IS A ANALYSIS SOFTWARE.

I THINK U SHOULD LEARN SOLIDWORKS FIRST AND THEN ANSYS .

AS U R IN AEROSPACE ENGG. U SHOULD STUDY CATIA SOFTWARE ALSO ,BCS IT IS GOOD FOR SURFACING.

BEST OF LUCK
