Do engineers make much money?

I heard two different people talk to me about engineering and they said completely opposite things!
One of them told me that engineering was very competitive, very hard to find a job and paid very poorly.
The other one told me that engineers were highly sought after and paid very well, almost as much as doctors.

Could I get a straight answer on the following questions:
How much money do engineers make?
How hard is it to get into the engineering profession?
What is the quality of work like (eg. are the hours long, is the environment safe)?

Chuck, think about what you want to be doing every day for the rest of your working life. Does it turn you on to think about diagnosing illnesses and making people well, doing medical research, designing machines or circuits or building bridges or airplanes?



Don't worry so much about the money. Do what fulfills you, what excites you. You will be happier and do better, and probably make more money. Some engineering jobs pay well, some don't pay as well. It is long and hard work to get through engineering school.



I never liked the sight or thought of blood. I love making machines that do a job. That is why I am an engineer. You need to sort these things out for yourself, and not let others make your decision. It is your life to live. Let them live theirs and you live yours. Best of luck.

Depends where you are I suppose. Where I am, ive heard the pay is average, but in other places ive heard the pay is really good. If you are considering taking it up as a job, make sure you do some good and proper research before you make any big decisions.
