I'm going to be working towards an engineering associates for now, and I was thinking that working at a hardware department store like home depot or lowe's would be a good place to work part time since I imagine they teach you about different building materials and tools which can be pretty useful in engineering technology. I plan to transfer and get a bachelors after my associates so I only need to work for 1 and a half years part time.

Having worked at a very large hardware store for 9 years and shopped at the same store before and after plus Home Depot and Lowes for 40 years or so, you are expected to know (by the customers) about all that stuff and know it when you are hired - the store barely gives you the chance to find out WHERE everything IS, not what it is. You will be lucky if co-workers have time free of customers and stocking or interest to tutor you.

You need a job that can offer you flexible scheduling so that it doesn't interfere with your classes and studying. Beyond that, it doesn't matter what you're doing.

Summer internships/co-ops are the place to get real-world experience related to your education. Part-time jobs are something to put money in your pocket while you're working towards your degree.
