A final for an undergraduate should be an application. Not research or theory.



Here is one which would be interesting.



1. Functional diagram for computer and peripherals for an Automobile crash mitigation system. A control unit that would sense when the car systems are not within proper range .... brake fluids, gas, braking action, steering controls, speed, etc .... and give warning. That would be the basics. On that you would add a set of controls that would take over when things seem to be going terribly wrong ... anti brake lock, lack of correlation between accelerator pedal and actual acceleration, and other situations where sensors of the operator actions don't correlate with sensors of machine responses. At those times, the computer would use something like a rules-driven analysis to take alternate actions to do what the operator wants. e.g., slamming on the brakes not slowing down the car, the computer controller would interrupt gas flow. If a collision the computer controller would analyze whether or not to cut all power, turn on interior lights, unlock all doors, etc.



A few others:

1. Computer functional block diagram for an Intruder detection and alarm. Sensors, outputs, data base, analysis procedures and action.



2. Warehouse inventory monitor and control system.



3. Information routing system for high-action company, e.g. buying different currencies on the international exchange based on instantaneous values of those currencies plus activity in markets and political areas in countries which use those currencies.

well it depends what you want to do with the degree. i dont know much about chemical engineering, but i do know much of the science "grunt work" is being exported to other countries like China and India. tehre are a variety of CS degrees. if you were to go for one i would go for a CS degree in software design. your job probably wont be exported as fast like some of the other jobs that are and both of those jobs will be alotttt harder than what your tech teacher is teaching right now.
