Go to azom.com they have info on both 304, 316 and many other metals.

In a nut shell, 316 stainless steels are more corrosion resistant than 304 stainless steels

Considering I have no idea at all what this is, i'll just go look it up for you.

304 is an INDOOR-OUTDOOR corrosive\ Wash Down, Industrial. Less than 5% rust stain in most outdoor environments after 30 years. No significant change to base material.

316 is an OUTDOOR - Highly corrosive \ Chemical, Offshore, Marine, Waste Water, Pulp and Paper. Less than 5% rust stain in most outdoor environments after 50 years. No significant change to base material.

AISI 434 does not contain nickel which results in a ferritic crystal structure. 434 also contains about 0.23% carbon. 316L contains about 12% nickel which gives it an austenitic structure. 316L does not contain significant carbon. Because of the lack of nickel the corrosion resistance of 434 is somewhat less than 316L, also because of it's ferritic structure it lacks good high-temperature strength, unlike 3xx series austenitic stainless. The main advantages of 434 would be lower cost (no nickel), better low-temp strength, and easier welding, machining, and forming. 3xx stainless are often very troublesome to machine because of their rapid work-hardening properties. 4xx series ferritic steels are typically less prone to weld corrosion problems.

304 has more sulfur and is easier to machine.

316 is tougher, and much more difficult to machine relatively speaking.

304 is more brittle.
