matlab is a simulation software.before learning it you need to know the purpose where you use this.
generally plotting a graph or plotting a equation of curve by hand is very difficult even if you draw by combining some points that graph may not be perfect.in engineering you need analyze graphs drawn for two different parameters.matlab provides easy way to plot those graphs.you can do all math operations using specified functions.a graph can be plotted by specifying the eq. of curve and independent parameter range.i think you in b.tech or similar course generally some of your textbooks contain some matlab programs to analyze problems virtually if you want to learn matlab first start doing those programs first because you learn theory from textbook and by typing these codes you understand their importance.even though you didn't understand the code you can check every instruction in help.if your not in engineering you have to follow the tutorials.but easy way to learn matlab is first know why you are using either electronics stream or in mechanical stream to design systems.then you can find some textbooks where matlab programming is given in your stream.then type each program in the textbook and analyze every instruction using help or command window.in this way by typing program by program you come across many new functions in this way programming in matlab can be improved .if you simply try to remember all functions in matlab by reading tutorials you can't learn programming because there are plenty of instructions so start doing a program by copying examples and analyze every thing in that program in this way you can learn both programming and debugging skills .all the best

You can learn matlab from a book or an online source. I will suggest you two sources:
www.amazon.com/Matlab-Third-Edition-Introduction-Programming/dp/0124058760. The above book is very great and you will for sure become a professional after reading the book. You can also see tutorialspoint.com/matlab tutorials.
But After you read the theory from the book you will have to practice a lot of problem solving. You can do so from here: https://radiusofcircle.blogspot.com

there is tons of tutorials for MATLAB. but reading alone is not enough, you need to practice and write code. for that you need copy of MATLAB. you can also use OCTAVE or any other clone. the only downside is that they don't have nice front end as MATLAB.
just google "matlab tutorial" dive in...
