It's the wrong spelling. It's called brake horsepower.
When measured on cars the brake horse power is measured at the brake (wheel attachment) to account for all the losses from the engine to the wheels through the transmission gear box.
If you like to measure the mechanical brake horsepower at the fan output of an electro motor you attach a dynamo-meter (a torque meter that is rotating with the shaft) while a mechanical load is braking the rpm down to the value that is measured when the motor would just drive the fan.
The output power is calculated by multiplying the measured dynamic torque with the rotational speed.
One mechanical (brake) horsepower equals 33'000 ft lb/min

They're all wrong. Brake horse power - BHP, was introduced as a term to avoid confusion with horsepower - HP. Back in the 1950's and before, cars were refered to with a HP rating which was based on a formula relating certain physical dimensions of the engine, which did not relate very well to it's output in horsepower as defined by engineers. Brake horsepower relates to the actual horsepower measured by the engine working against a dynamometer on a test bed. Even this had inaccuracies because the tester did not generally use the exhaust system and other parts used in the car, so BHP tended to be optimistic. These days, DIN horsepower refers to engine output on a test bed, but fitted with most of the ancillaries used on the production car installation.

Brake horsepower (bhp) is the measure of an engine's horsepower without the loss in power caused by the gearbox, generator, differential, water pump, and other auxiliary components such as alternator, power steering, and AC compressor. Thus the prefix "brake" refers to where the power is measured: at the engine's output shaft, as on an engine dynamometer. The actual horsepower delivered to the driving wheels is less. An engine would have to be retested to obtain a rating in another system. The term "brake" refers to the original use of a band brake to measure torque during the test (which is multiplied by the engine RPM and a scaling constant to give horsepower).

do you mean break hP as in the sentence "I am going to break wind in my Brake hp shoes.
or do you mean BRAKE HP. Think you might want to look up that term...
